Big Finale Friday

Tonight on The SciFi Channel, it’s “Sci Fi Friday”. But this is no ordinary Friday. No, tonight is the Season Finale of Stargate SG-1Stargate Atlantis, and Battlestar Galactica, all in the same night!

On SG1, Sam & Daniel’s civilian selfs have to restore the timeline that SG1 has scrambled, in hopes of restoring time to it’s natural self, but that’s alot easier said than done in a timeline where the Stargate was never uncovered to begin with! If they can pull it off, Earth will be saved, and even have another ZPM in it’s possession!

On Atlantis, the wraith have descended upon Atlantis. Rodney manged to get the Ancient Satellite up and running for 1 devastating blow, but it wasn’t enough to stop them. So tonight, the battle takes to the streets as the Wraith begin their invasion of Atlantis! With limited ammunition, and no energy to the Ancient systems, how can they fight them off? And if they lose and have to sink Atlantis, can they both save enough information from the Ancient Database to prove useful and blow the city beyond the wraith’s ability to repair it?

And on Galactica, the fleet stumbles across the mythical homeworld of humanity, Kobol! While they’re exploring, cylons shoot down a Raptor. All out war begins again :)

I’ve got the VCR ready to record, and made preparations for a nice seat on the couch. I’m gonna be busy tonight!

Battlestar Galactica

Alot of the guys here at WES are big Science fiction buffs, and have been raving about The SciFi Channel‘s new Battlestar Galactica series. Unfortunately, now that Laura & I go visit the folks in Meridian almost every weekend, I haven’t had a chance to watch it.

Well, I got my chance. Tuesday night they ran a Marathon of all 5 episodes. I came in the middle of the second (Still haven’t seen “33″), and watched all the rest. I have to admit, I’m impressed. The realistic space battles are incredible to watch, especially Starbuck’s maneuver at the end of the 4th episode where she flies backwards while being chased so that she can engage her pursuer.

I might have to go pick up some VHS tapes and just tape SciFi from 7-10 (Galactica, Stargate SG-1, and Stargate: Atlantis).

Mystery Science Theater 3000

So now I’m sittin here in the apartment watching Ninja Master and Ninja Master II from MST3K. Definately good for a laugh :)

I always enjoyed MST3K, both on TV and the movie, and really hated to hear it was canceled. But, I’m in luck, and now you can get the seasons on DVD! They’re not the complete seasons, but still plenty to keep me entertained.

Something else to add to my “DVD Wishlist”…

Smallpox

Well, I just finished watching FX’s SmallPox on my cough cough TV. It was a great program, although it was a little on the unwarranted-fear side. They brought up some great points about social behavior in such a situation, and how there’s unfortunately very little that could be done to prevent the panicing & riots from a widespread outbreak. Definately something to catch on reruns if you didn’t see it.

They did a good job of keeping it semmingly “scientific”, without being too sensational. They did kinda take a “worst case scenario” view, placing it in 2002 (before the US began stockpiling vaccine). As the epidemic spreads from the US through Europe and the rest of the world, they show several different scenarios of world governments trying to control the situation, and it seems no solution works. The US took a conservative approach initially, and tried to leave it up to people to run themselves. Great Britian tried to calm the public by lying initially, then using military force to control the public and enforce order. Other countries in Asia started off with use of military force, but it seemed no solution really could prevent the kind of paranoia and human behavior that led to riots, random acts of violence, and unwarranted attacks on fellow citizens.

I also managed to catch an episode of King of the Hill. Now to watch some Family Guy on cartoon network :)

TVoIP ?

Over here in Clinton, I don’t have alot of stuff yet to keep me busy. Just my computer, really, and it’s getting kinda boring. So I got to trying to find something to keep me busy, and stumbled across WinAmp‘s new Media Library feature with “Internet TV” listings.

I stumbled around a little bit and found stations streaming Family Guy, Futurama, Seinfeld, News Radio, and several others. Most of them were full, but I found a few that I could watch. After digging around a bit, I found IRC rooms and other websites that streamed major networks real-time, so I could watch FOX and ABC.

So maybe I’ll be able to keep up with my TV afterall :)

The Glory days of the dot-com

Another late night up watching Rhianna, and I came across Dilbert, the TV series, on Cartoon Network. The show didn’t last long, only two seasons I think, but it’s a great cartoon. Just like the Comics.

Anyway, this particular episode was obviously aired back in the glory days of the dot-com boom. Wally discovers that, contrary to the company newsletter, Engineers are in high demand in other companies. One scene in particular showed Wally negotiating for a private jet for his Llama at another company.

I remember one time when a recruiting company found my resume online. They evidently burned it to some CD, and sent it (with presumably a few hundred others) to several companies. In the span of a month, I got job offers from Germany, Japan, South America, and several in the states. The lowest figures anyone threw at me were $70,000 for a 6 month contract. And I was only a freshman in college at the Time! I remember thinking then that if I could hold out for a few years and get my degree, I’ld be rollin in dough. Shame the economy didn’t hold out. Now I’m lucky to have a job at all…

I wonder how long before the next engineering boom?

Enterprise Season 3 & Jake 2.0

Last week was the premier of Star Trek: Enterprise Season 3. Apparently Season 2′s ratings didn’t live up to expectations, so the directors have decided to change things up a bit and take the show in a new direction. Now there’s a paramilitary group going along with Enterprise as they journey deep into “the Expanse”.

I have to admit I liked the first episode, although it did seem a little strange. Archer agreeing to start melting down warp relays to get enough latinum to see the Xindi, seemed a little different from his usual self. T’Pol and Trip getting intimate at the end seemed very odd. The entire episode seemed a little off, like something just wasn’t clicking. But I do have to admit I liked the action for a change. So I guess I’m hooked for another season.

Another show I caught was Invisible Man, where a guy is placed in a potentially deadly situation and given super powers, and relunctantly decides to help the good guys. All in all, though, I think I’ll watch it. It looked fun.

Another Saturday of the SciFi channel

I’m sitting here at home, on a Saturday. Laura & her mom are taking a nap, while I try to do some work on the laptop here.. And I have the TV turned to the SciFi channel, watching Rebirth of Mothra 2. And I’m amazed at how stupid and silly these movies are, but at the same time how entertaining. Once you get past the bad dialog, cheesy bluescreen effects, and dubbed dialogue, it’s actually entertaining :)

But it makes me wonder how stars like Jet Li survive in a country dominated by movies like that.

Spike on Buffy: The Vampire Slayer

Saw a kewl article on Reader’s Rebuttal where they state that for all the bad things Spike has done, he’s still just “the lonely poet trying to win the girl”. An interesting read, and something to mull over as the final episode approaches.

On a side note, I saw on ET last night that Spike is going to become one of the new characters on The WB’s Angel, another one of my favorite shows. So that just leave Xander & Willow to find someplace to go. With the new powers that Willow has been slinging around as of late, I wouldn’t doubt seeing her in a spinoff. And I would watch every episode :)

Stargate-SG1 season 7 has begun

Last friday they aired the season premiere of Stargate: SG1, one of my favorite shows. With Buffy off the air, and Enterprise, CSI, and ER all in reruns for the summer, I was starting to worry I wouldn’t have anything to watch on TV.

The season premiere was a 2 hour special, and a good one at that. They’re setting up for some big stuff this season, going head to head with the system lords and such, and trying to find the Ancients. They brought Daniel Jackson back, which is a good thing, but they picked a really wierd way to do it. Seems there could’ve been alot cleaner ways to do that. And they got rid of Jonas, which is odd. He did so well last season. Maybe he’ll come back in a later episode.

All in all, the SciFi channel has come through for me again ;-)
