Southern Baptists unveil digital music tool

Just saw this on the Clarion Ledger:
Southern Baptists on Thursday unveiled a new online digital music tool akin to Apple’s iTunes, which not only offers downloadable Christian music but allows users to custom arrange songs and produce corresponding audio files and sheet music.
Lifeway Christian Resources, the research and publishing arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, [...]

Delain: Lucidity

A friend of mine recently tipped me off to a band called Delain and their newest album Lucidity.  It’s listed as “Goth Metal”, which usually would send me running in the opposite direction.  This stuff is actually pretty nice tho.  Granted it does have one or two “Deathlok“-like tracks, but most of it is an interesting mix of Celtic themes with Queensryche-style rock.

It’s been a bit hard to find, but I finally found a place called dis-order.com that stocked it and accepted PayPal.  They’re based out of somewhere in the Netherlands (I think) but they mailed the CD here with no trouble.

Wierd Al’s "Don’t Download This Song"

I just found this on MySpace. (I had to include the YouTube version since the MySpace version it seems doesn’t allow embed’ing. It’s lower quality, but good enough.. The music is the important part).

I always loved Wierd Al’s stuff, and it looks like Straight Outta Lynwood is no exception. The animation adds alot to this also, thanks to Bill Plympton.

Code Monkey – by Jonathan Coulton

Found this on Slashdot earlier today and simply had to comment on it.

Jonathan Coulton
runs a “thing-a-week” series and this week he has a song entitled “Code Monkey”, an anthem for underappreciated software developers everywhere. Some of the lyrics:

Code Monkey get up, get coffee

Code Monkey go to job
Code Monkey have boring meeting
With boring manager Rob

Rob say Code Monkey very diligent
But his output stink
His code not functional or elegant
What do Code Monkey think?

Code Monkey think maybe manager want to write ******* login page himself
Code Monkey not say it out loud
Code Monkey not crazy, just proud

Code Monkey like Fritos
Code Monkey like Tab and Mountain Dew
Code Monkey very simple man
Big, warm, fuzzy, secret heart
Code Monkey like you

Not only is it funny (and surprisingly accurate), it’s just a plain catchy song. So catchy, in fact, that the sheer force of geeks worldwide trying to hear it has seemingly crashed the server for now. The music’s good, the lyrics are good, and it’s even under a Creative Commons license! So not only can I talk about it, but I even tell you to go download it here (Torrent) and it’s legal! I’m definately gonna have to check out his CD Smoking Monkey.

KT Tunstall

I thought I had already written on this long ago, but I can’t find it…

Several months ago a friend turned me on to KT Tunstall and her NPR Interview where she performs a few songs live. Not only is the music just fantastic in sound, but it’s interesting technically because she uses a looping pedal to turn her solo-songs into entire orchestras. Part chinese, part scottish, plays guitar and sings.. And the music has an intriguing celtic sound to it..

If you want to check it out, you can find alot of her music on Pandora. They’ve just added alot of it and I created a KT Tunstall Pandora Channel. It won’t play her music exclusively, Pandora doesn’t work like that, but there’s alot of her stuff in there.

Update: April 23rd, 2006
If you’re not afraid of Myspace, then head on over to the KT Tunstall page on MySpace. She’s got 4 songs (Including my fav “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree”), and a video from some UK Late-night show of her performing live with the pedals.
