The Fun of Keyword-based Advertising

Just saw this in my Google Reader window, and it’s a perfect example of how Google Adsense targets ads at the content of an article, picking up on “medical” and “injury” and completely missing “neuroscience”, “rap”, and the fact that it’s a “Science Fiction” blog (io9).

Child Taped To Chair At YMCA – News- msnbc.com

Where do they find these idiots?
When Tommie Pullins went to pick up his grandchildren from the YMCA on Fortification Street on Thursday, another child and his 10-year-old granddaughter told him his grandson had been taped to a chair.
“I asked her well, what was he doing? She said, well, he was in time out and they [...]

Some E-Books Are More Equal Than Others – Pogue’s Posts Blog – NYTimes.com

I’ve wanted a Kindle for a while now, but after this I’m not so sure.
But no, apparently the publisher changed its mind about offering an electronic edition, and apparently Amazon, whose business lives and dies by publisher happiness, caved. It electronically deleted all books by this author from people’s Kindles and credited their accounts for [...]

New script follows:

#!/bin/tcsh
echo Converting “$1″ to “${1:r}.jpg”
@ [...]

Optimizing Images with Hazel

I use the Quicksilver “Capture Region” tool alot on my Macbook to save images for use here & on VizWorld.com, and it does a great job of saving PNG’s on my Desktop.  However, I’ve recently noticed that the images could be made alot smaller (and then be alot easier on Bandwidth once I upload them [...]

Beautiful Typography & FireFox 3.5

Someone just sent this to me, and I had to share.  One of the new features in FireFox3.5 is the “font-face” CSS Attribute, which lets you reference fonts not installed on a user’s system.
There’s a great example website you can visit here, and above is a screenshot showing it in FireFox 3.5 (right) and IE7 [...]

Pictures of 18-wheeler Fire

Yesterday (July 1st) on the way home from work, my boss & I saw a huge plume of black smoke rising into the sky along I20 West outside of Vicksburg.  We arrived just as the fire crews and other emergency services arrived, to see them extinguish the flaming 18-wheeler that had burst into flames.  Not [...]
