iphone3gsWith eager anticipation, I watched the WWDC keynote (well, kinda, I watched the Gizmodo livestream) hoping for news of iPhone OS3 and Snow Leopard.  Unfortunately, I was disappointed all around.

OS3

Well, OS3 will be publicly available next week (Wednesday).  Unfortunately, I’ll be out of town next week so I’m stuck either waiting until I return or risking an install from my Hotel room.  I had hoped it would be out before then, as the new TomTom on iPhone looks pretty awesome, I could really use it traveling.  Not to mention the other new features like official Tethering.

Snow Leopard

Gotta wait until September.. Nuff said.

iPhone 3Gs

This is the one that really ticks me off.  So they announce new hardware, not unexpected.  Identical form factor to the iPhone 3G, but a faster processor & new features like Voice Activated Controls, integrated Compass, Video, autofocus Camera, etc.  Available in 16GB & 32GB versions, the 16GB retails for $199 with 2 year contract, just like my 3G (which is now $99).  All great stuff, that I would love to have.  In fact, I was already making plans to stand in line next Friday to get one.

Unfortunately, AT&T is being a real dick about it and won’t allow existing 3G customers to upgrade.  iPhone 3G customers have to pay a premium $499 or $599 (although some reports have it as high as $699) to upgrade, since we’re not eligible for upgrade.  With the previous upgrade (iPhone to iPhone3G) they waited this upgrade penalty, but it seems AT&T isn’t going to do that this time.  In addition, the OS3 MMS support won’t be available at launch (later in the summer) and iPhone Tethering won’t be available either, with no idea when it will be available.

So the real loser here is AT&T.  Apple had some great announcements, but AT&T is fouling it all up.
