Sony Cybershot DSC-W50
For my birthday (Which was 2 weeks ago, ya lazy bums), my dad got me a Sony Cybershot DSC-W50. It’s a beautiful 6 megapixel camera with a 3x optical zoom lens. It’s quite an upgrade from my old 1MP Cybershot, and alot smaller too.
The LCD screen on the back seems huge, compared to what I’m used to. It’s only 2.5inches, but compared to the 1inch I’m used to it seems massive. The photo quality is incredible, and it’s pretty darn simple to use. But it does have it’s bad points.
First off is the interface on the thing. The original cybershot had a wheel to rotate between Still Shot, Action Shot, movie, & Settings, and a directional pad to navigate menus. This one has a huge wheel with about 10 settings: Movie, night, twilight, daylight, still, etc etc. On top of that, it has a directional pad to navigate menus (Which double as flash-settings, timer settings, and something else I haven’t figured out yet), and other buttons to control the On-Screen Display and other things. The button has looks like a Trash Can & an array of dots I thought would be for image review & deletion. But no, it’s for setting the desired image resolution. You press the “play” button way up at the top to review images. All in all, it’s the most confusing layout of buttons and options that I’ve ever seen on a camera. You’ld think that with an LCD display & directional pad they could just put most of these in software and save alot of mechanical and electrical work.
My other complaint is the oldest complaint in all of digital camera: Flash Memory. Why no 1 card has emerged as the dominant force in flash memory eludes me. Compact Flash, SD Media, Memory Stick. None are compatible, but they all perform exactly the same thing. Why Memory Stick hasn’t taken off is easy to understand: Sony owns it. Strangely tho, now they’re even competing against themselves with more varieties that I can comprehend: Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick Pro Duo, Memory Stick Micro, Memory Stick with “MagicGate”. None of which are compatible, and none of which seems to offer any appreciable benefits over the others except in size. It’s frustrating, and more so since my “Memory Stick” for my old camera won’t work in the Memory Stick Pro Duo slot for this camera, and I can’t reuse the 1Gb CompactFlash card that I bought for my old e740. It’s annoying, but just the way it is.
Hopefully I can get some neat pics with it soon and get some up here. At 6 Mega Pixels I’ll probably wind up processing them pretty heavily, but that’s also part of the game. Here’s hoping they’re good
