Dirt Cheap in Mississippi
I saw this article from the Consumerist linked from Gizmodo today, of all places, and couldn’t help but link it here. “Dirt Cheap” is the new name for what alot of us in Mississippi remember as Hudson’s. They moved into Meridian’s old Service Merchandise building (Does anyone else remember that old place?) a few years back, and have enjoyed monumental success ever since. Every time I drive past there on I20 the parking lot is full. I’ll admit, I’ve even been there a few times myself. I’m somewhat proud to say my HP48G came from there, from someone who thought it was a low-end PDA.
I was somewhat surprised to see this article written by a fellow Mississippian, Kate Bingaman. She’s an assistance professor of Graphic Design at Mississippi State, with her own website Obsessive Consumption.
One of my favorite quotes about her purchases:
| Lillian Vernon Monogrammed Pencils: $2.00 for a pack of 20 My name is not Julius. I don’t even know any Juliuses but I own twenty pencils that should belong to someone with that moniker. |
Update – I noticed that the www.servicemerchandise.com website is actually just a Yahoo! Store. Since I’m not really sure how safe, or legal, it is, I replaced the link instead to Wikipedia’s entry.
