This is a followup to the original NEC Multisync LED 2180QX story.

Well, today we finally got the Dual-link DVI cable that we needed to really get this monitor going. (Yeah yeah, I know, it’s almost been 2 months. It’s the government, remember?) I powered down the computer, switched from the VGA-to-DVI cable to the Dual-link DVI cable, and powered up. Wow.

That’s about all I know to say. I had expected things to be a little better, not quite so fuzzy, but wow. It’s like a whole new monitor. The colors are completely different, alot brighter now, and the image is now crisper than my other DVI-connected monitor. If you look at the picture shown to the right, you’ll see the new monitor on the left sitting next to my Sony SDM-P234 LCD. I’ve loaded the CIE 1931 on both monitors just to see the difference. In person, the different is plainly visible side-by-side. I was afraid that a camera wouldn’t accurately capture the differences, but to my surprise it does a fair job of it. In person, it’s alot more noticable, but you can still see how less visible the purple line is on the new NEC monitor compared to Sony.

So, in short, this is one kickass monitor. Connecting it with the Dual-Link DVI cable makes it even more badass. The colors are brighter, the images are sharper, and it’s a complete dream to stare at all day.   I’m still unable to find it anywhere on NEC’s website, but I think it may have been released as the NEC LCD2180WG-LED, which they set the MSRP at $8300.  Sadly, still far beyond the reaches of my wallet..
