Harry Potter And the Goblet of Fire

Well, Laura and I went to see the first showing Saturday morning of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I have to admit, I’m impressed.
Before you read any further, I have to confess: I’ve never read any of the books. So my review is solely based on the quality of the movie. The film has a much darker tone than the previous ones, but it matches Harry’s newer “mature” role. Full of death and torture charms, resurrection plots, and the “Death Eaters”, I think it’s a good call to take this one from PG to PG13. The movie does fumble in a few spots, however.
One thing I couldn’t quite figure out was what seemed to be a bit of romance between Herminie (sp?) and Ron. I attribute it to the young age of the actors, but I couldn’t tell if they were supposed to be crushing on each other or avoiding each other through most of the film. Ron’s role in this film was basically nonexistant, which is a little sad as he seemed to fill the “everyman” role nicely as Harry rises to ever-more-mythic status at the school. Another oddity was at the very end when the Death Eaters are revealed, Harry doesn’t tell anyone at the school. I’ve been told that in the book he does, and it’s a rather daunting list and a big part of the book. In the movie however, I only caught who 1 of them was, and he makes no mention of it back home.
All in all, it’s a great movie. A long one too, at 2 and a half hours. Also, you’ll be happy to see a great teaser for the new Superman movie.
