The agony of de-feet versus the Mall Of America
Well, day 2 is coming to a close and I’m exhausted.
This morning there was, again, two tutorials: Point Lattice structures in vis, and Illustrative Visualization. The Illustrative viz talk was mostly on medical stuff, using exaggerated or symbolic imagery like anatomy diagramd, so I took in the vastly more technical latticce talk. They opened with basic 1D sampling theory, and quickly dove into n-D spaces, including non-cartesian spaces. One interesting tidbit was the discussion on computing Fourier transforms in non cartesian spaces. It was hard stuff, but interesting. After that they dove into Group Theory, and my poorly undercaffienated brain couldn’t take it.
After lunch, we played hookey and took the LightRail over to the Mall of America. I had always heard that it was big, the biggest in the US. After seeing the two rollercoasters, ferris wheel, log flume, 3 Caribou Coffee‘s, 2 Victoria’s Secret‘s, and dozens of other duplicated stores scattered across its 3 floors, I would agree with them. But the whole thing was a bit underwhelming, the hype is better (and less painful, my feet still ache) than the truth.
Well, all my souvenir shopping is done, unless something amazing just comes along. Now to just wait for tonight’s reception.
