Laura and I took off yesterday, since Laura’s mom was there to watch Rhianna for us, and went to take in a movie. When we arrived, Serenity was starting in 10 minutes, so it seemed a perfect fit. I’ve been wanting to see it, and so has Laura (surprisingly).

I wasn’t disappointed. It’s probably one of the best SciFi movies in years. Joss Whedon comes through with not a spectacularly innovative concept, but an amazingly well-told story. It’s a classic story of the big powerful government that did something bad but well intentioned and covered it up, and now is trying to stop anyone from revealing it. The main characters, of course, are trying to reveal it, although they don’t know it for half the movie. The bulk of the story is fairly predictable, but there are a few shockers that will catch you off guard, especially if you’re a fan of the show. My favorite “quirk” of the story is that they make no claims to be heroes, in fact they do alot to prove they’re bad guys. But in the end, you root for them anyway. An anti-hero isn’t an easy character to build, but Joss Whedon does an excellent job of it.

I’ve only seen two or three episodes of Firefly, but I think now I’m gonna go pick up the box set. (Christmas idea, perhaps?) I give this one a firm 5 out of 5.
