The Power of Google
Sometimes it can be fun to just dig around google and see what’s on the internet. In tonight’s edition, I’m going to see what I can find out about all of what Mako Surgical has been up to since I left. I’ve tried to stay in touch with some of my old collegeaus there, but they’ve clammed up tighter than a steel trap (Dennis, if you’re reading this, READ YOUR EMAIL!). Of course, I have a little insider info of what was going on when I left, but I won’t spill those beans. And I’m curious about what’s going on with my work since I left, because some of it was pretty neat & cutting edge and I kinda miss it. Let’s see what beans have slipped through other cracks:
- From this link we see that they’ve just lured away Amerdeep Dugal from his position as Biomedical Research Engineer for the Brain Rehabilitation Research Center under the Brooks Center at the University of Florida.
- A Premarket Notification of a new “Stereotaxy” device named “Modification to Voyager Linux”.
- The FDA duplicates the listing, but this time adds a PDF of the actual submission.. So we’ve got “Stereotactic Guidance” added to Voyager Linux… Intruiging.
- The University of Florida also lets it slip that Mako is sponsoring a project for Design and Computational Analysis of Novel Knee Replacement Concepts. Googling the 2 listed investigators turns up some more interesitng details, including that they both work in the University of Florida Tribology Lab, with some interesting projects. Also a nice article from UF about a knee joint computer simulation.
And to think, all this from just Googling “Mako Surgical”.. Most of it’s not too surprising, but perhaps you’ve started to notice the underlying trend. It’s no secret that Z-Kat has the WAM. It’s all over the internet, and it’s even in the Wikipedia under “Leonardo’s Robot”. But let’s go a bit further… The one interesting tidbit in there is this “Amerdeep Dugal”. WHo is he?
Well, a quick Google turns up not much, but reveals that perhaps he is “Amardeep Dugal” who was hired to work with the Brooks Center for Rehabilitation Studies as a Biological Scientist on 11/15/04. Too similar to be a coincidence, I think. It also says he graduated from the University of Buffalo. So what does Google Say?
- A document entitled Knee Arthroscopy for Patient Education, written by Amardeep..
- He graduated with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering, and he’s Amardeep S. Dugal now… (important for the next point)
- In a truly creepy breach of security (maybe?), I found a listing of transactions from Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited, showing an “Amardeep Singh” with $75. Same guy? Maybe, maybe not.. A little more digging reveals that this is one of their Unpaid Dividend Data reports, with a listing for this Amardeep Singh for every non-metro year. What does this mean? I haven’t the foggiest… Does he owe them money? Do they owe him money? Is this evidence that Z-Kat is in bed with Big Oil? Boy would all of Rony Abovitz’s critics love that to be true..
So what have we learned tonight folks? The essence of information is to be free. Restricting information, be it through NDA’s or Firewalls or whatever, doesn’t really work. If somebody knows something, word gets out.. And such concludes our lesson.
