Well, my time at Z-Kat is up, and my time at ERDC doesn’t start until January, so I have a week off. What to do with it?

Well, it seems my dad and a friend of his need some help with setting up a VPN that’s behind dynamic IP’s, firewalls, and routers on both end. That’ll be a neat trick to figure out. Especially when they want to do it all with free software & WindowsXP.

Also, VirajAlankar has been experimenting with Debian on his home machine, and has got me wanting to try Linux on my desktop again. I tried Whitebox & RedHat 9.0, but neither seemed to work very well. My machine has one of the new NForce chipsets with integrated sound & video, and it caused alot of problems during the autodetect. My motherboard also has 2 NIC’s onboard (one with the NForce, and a second one integrated separately), and apparently some new bleeding edge Firewire/USB chipset. Needless to day, Linux doesn’t do bleeding-edge hardware very well, so it pretty much trashed my system when it would boot.. USB errors, interrupt errors, X wouldn’t start, and I simply didn’t feel like taking the time to look into it further..

Well, over in Clinton I won’t have anything but my computer & a microwave. So I might try looking into it again… Suggestions for a distro?
