After that last story, I dug around some more and found a nice website detailing what’s been called the Google Dance. Apparently Google only really updates their indices about once a month. But since they haved 10,000 Linux PC-s in a giant cluster that runs everything, they have to update each machine individually, and it takes about a week. So during that week, search results fluctuate wildly, as as the week goes on you can see some really interesting stuff as it updates. Another good article on high-performance large-scale systems.
